Mangos!

Mmmm.... Mangos. Not just any old mangos, Alfonso mangos! (The king of mangos!) Esmerelda had a fantasy of traveling to Northern India at the peak of mango season to wallow in the pleasure of endless ripe mangos of every variety imaginable. Tragically we had to leave the country just before the season was arriving. For this alone, I fear, our untimely departure broke her heart.
Fyi- Esmerelda and her family are huge mango snobs and they say the best mangos in the world are actually to be found in Pakistan. E's face forms a look of outright disgust when she discusses the mangos available in the United States. During Bush's last visit to India he gave away two very big prizes. One, the less important of the two but the one that got all the press was the go ahead to develop certain types of nuclear energy technology. (yawn) The second, far bigger news that barely got noticed, was the go ahead for India to ship mangos to the U.S. market in a year's time. Now that is something worth a headline! Get ready America! You have no idea what is about to arrive!

I beg to differ - as E says the best mangoes are grown in northern part of the Indian subcontinent - that means Uttar Pradesh and Pakistan - not Alfonso which is a Southern Indian mango :)
Though South India has its gem - Mallika

Some day there should be a friendly blind taste test, as there have been with wines when the French were shocked, SHOCKED!, that Californian wines beat them, between Pakistan's and India's mangos. Who cares who has the best...after all most Pakistanis have never eaten the best mangos of India so what are they comparing them to? Like cricket matches, I am sure people could enjoy the competition. I hope some day to finally go to Malihabad outside of Lucknow and taste mangos ripened fresh on the trees. Some day...mmmmmmmmmmmmm...the Abdullah Nursery is a famous one, if anyone knows of others I would be happy to hear about them.

E, alfonso is a southern Indian variety as far as I know. Hopefully I would be able to pick up Alfonso in a blind tasting :) You are right the French were indeed shocked when Californian wine beat them.
I have the dream of visiting Malihabad one of these days. Probably a couple of years away.....
Till then I yearn for good mangoes in California

Actually the ones from Andhra Pradesh are the tastiest, its called Banginapally. Try them and you will know why commented like this. I think Alphonso comes from the Ratnagiri region in Malabar/Konkan coast (west) , not sure though.

the other variety is "Raasalu" (juice), you can open up a small hole through the skin and squeeze the mango to get the whole juicy pulp out

Baiganpalli is indeed very tasty. Big, Sweet. I think it comes from Andhra Pradesh.
Langdaa is another sweet variety. This is easily available in UP and Bihar etc.

I think mangos from Brazil are quite nice as well, though its hard to beat a mango tree in one's own backyard, Our harvest last year in Chennai produced a whopping 400+ mangos.
