Esmerelda Goes Native

Esmerelda was too lazy to get up for the photo, but here is a picture of her wearing a sari. E prefers cotton sarees, as she does not like the 'flow' of the silk kind. She was a little apprehensive about wearing this outfit in public as her sari folding skills are not as advanced as she would like. But, nevertheless, she received many appreciative smiles from people in the street. I think the locals dug her efforts to fit in. Certainly at the restaurant we ate at the waiting staff showed a previously unseen degree of deference, grace and gentlemanliness. An Indian friend who met us for dinner flipped out when she saw E in the sari. She herself, our friend reported, can not be bothered by the time and effort to wear a sari so she was impressed by E's efforts.

I was just thinking to comment on the other day to ask E if she has tired her luck with saree.

There are such amazingly soft cotton saris, handloom material I have never felt, that it was hard for me to resist buying them. I did not see such cotton in Nalli's or Kumaran, the massive old chain department stores for saris and fabric, but saw them in some of the more boutique shops like Kalpa Druma, but mostly from Maurya where I have befriended the owner who is an expert on the niche sari market, at least from my ignorant perspective. She knows a lot about textiles and traditional arts of weaving, dying and decorating fabric. Once the saris are bought, I must wear them or otherwise be a complete idiot wasting money. So far they are worn at home for Yitzy's entertainment. I do hope to wear them in public more often here but the stares are hard to tolerate. I have to thicken my skin and give myself about 15 minutes to wrap them decently.
