Koyambedu Wholesale Market

Koyambedu market is supposed to be one of the biggest wholesale markets in Asia. From what I saw in the afternoon when people were packing up and sleeping, it looks like it must be bustling in the early hours. I remembered I needed to when I saw another Chennai blog with a post about the market with beautiful photos. My photos are not as nice. Here is a link to the better photos: http://traveltogether.blogdns.net/. I saw the flower, fruit and vegetable markets. Here are some photos to scroll through.

Coconut, before it turns into a hard, heavy, round "nut". Or so I am told. This is what it looks like before it looks like a human head and falls to the ground? What do I know?

Esmeralda, if you are ever in London shout across and I promise to make you vadais (the indian version of falafel) out of banana flower. You might hate it, but then again....

Will try it! I am a big banana lover but only of the traditional sort, the part of the banana plant that primates love, though I understand chimps also eat the peel. I will certainly try a banana flour "falafel". Thanks for your comment!

Uma > do u mean 'Vada' ? or something else ? Oh what do i know.

Anyone knows - why people can eat/digest some kind of plants, and not eat/digest other kinds ?

Believe almost all flowers can be eaten, and a very very few are poisonous.

On the same note: Aren't all vegetables - actually flowers?
